Responsibilities of this position include assisting with the coordination and planning of a comprehensive biological safety program to recognize, eliminate and control occupational health hazards and diseases in the workplace setting; investigating adequacy of ventilation, exhaust equipment, lighting and other conditions that may affect employee safety, health, comfort, or efficiency. These responsibilities will include direct interaction with campus biological, chemical and radiological laboratories. Further, this position will perform duties in accordance with established guidelines and associated regulations, such as OSHA compliance, CDC/NIH accident investigation and reporting, workplace safety inspections, regulatory compliance audits, fire safety inspections, shop safety inspections, and development and administration of safety training.   

In addition to the above duties, the Biological Safety Specialist II will be expected to implement workplace safety and health programs through promotions and interaction with ISU research staff. The specialist at this level will also implement evidence-based and engaging training programs while assisting with database management, to include basic programming.     

The successful candidate will have the ability to form positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers and establish professional campus and community relationships through effective written and oral communication; strong problem-solving capabilities along with the ability to work independently as well as with a team; and excellent organizational and multitasking skills to handle a variety of simultaneous duties. The candidate will also possess the ability to routinely use personal computers along with a variety of software expertise.
