This is the first course in a two-part specialized studies certificate for professionals working in the areas of life science research, and graduate and undergraduate students looking to enter into the biosafety field after graduation. Utilizing the combination of biosafety principles and real-world best practices, participants will be able to acquire valuable knowledge and skills to pursue an entry-level career in biosafety. The course covers key topics in biosafety, laboratory biosecurity, performing biological risk assessments, identifying laboratory types, understanding the hierarchy of controls, differentiating microorganism risk groups, understanding biosafety level requirements, and laboratory compliance. By the end of the course, learners will gain critical awareness of biosafety practices and regulations, equipping them for professional growth in the field.

Instructor will serve throughout a 10-week course.

Individuals hired to teach these courses must understand that all such agreements with the University are made on a course-by-course basis and that the Instructor will be made no guarantee of continual involvement with the University in any capacity.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications (required at time of application)

• Advanced degree from an accredited institution; or Bachelors degree and equivalent work experience (2+ years) in the field of biosafety or biorisk management

Additional
• Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in biorisk management
• Must be committed to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
• Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
• Effective interpersonal skills
• Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools
• Comfort in dealing with international professionals and students

Preferred
• Experience designing/revising curriculum and measuring student performance
• College-level teaching experience (or the corporate equivalent)
• Experience working as a biosafety professional
• Current participation in professional associations (ex. ABSA, CSHEMA, BSAA)
• Biosafety Professional Certification (RBP, CBSP, IFBA, BSAA)
